Ontario school board plumbers earn more than $100,000 per year

The government has been disclosing the salary report every year since 1996. Overall, nearly 34,000 Ontario public sector workers earned more than $100,000 last year. Among about 1,000 of them work for the Ontario School Boards and School Authorities.
  • Principals and superintendents take up most of the spots in the list. Those are educators with management role. This is well-taken and should be respected.
  • Dozens elementary and high schools teachers also made the list. Have you ever seat in to your little girlfriends and/or sisters class? The chance is that the slides and lecture is exactly the same as a few years ago. Can you believe that a class can be as simple as getting the students to take turns to read out King Lear and handing back essays? Shakespeare doesn't change.
  • Four plumbers at the Toronto District School Board earned more than $100,000. Good for them!
See Public Sector Salary Disclosure 2007 (Disclosure for 2006) : School Boards for the complete list.

UPDATE: For those who are outside Ontario, $100K/year Canadian is what many MD and engineers in Ontario are earning.

Cathode, this is a good link. Your point is well-taken.

My guess is that the reason why those teachers got $10k/year is not because of the difficult work. It is all because of the power of the union.

Um, yeah, good luck with that. Have you ever tried to teach Shakespeare to anybody? Much less a class full of high school students.

Meh, thanks for the comment. I am not a fan of Shakespeare at all. In the old days (not sure if that is still true), Shakespeare was mandatory for those who are applying to Ontario professional schools. After so many years, we are still upset about that. Here is a common quote: "Why did we need to read out Shakespeare loud every other days in order to get into the university and perform the procedures today!?"

I will never understand why people want to cut back teachers salaries ... it's a simple concept: bad teachers produce bad students, bad students grow up to be bad professionals. Paying a good salary means we have a greater chance of getting good teachers. Which means we will produce better professionals in the future which will earn more, and increase the Gross National Product, which will end up earning more money for the government. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that teaching is more then getting students to write essays and read King Lear, that was one of the most ignorant comments I've read all week.

Attitudes like the one displayed in this blog are the ones that are ruining our country. Invest in teachers, invest in police, invest in public transportation. All of those things will pay us back in the future. On the other hand, if we reduce our taxes now you might just have another hundred bucks to play with ... yep, that's worth all the damage we would do to our children and future ... good call ... let's cut back teachers salaries.

Shmoooooo, thanks for the lengthy reply. Don't get me wrong. It is not about teacher's salary. It is about whether the government is using the tax dollar wisely. I am sure all of us are somehow related to the teachers. I got a few friend s teaching at high school for many years now.

"Paying a good salary means we have a greater chance of getting good teachers." I am told that a teacher's salary is weakly related to their performance. It is more related to how well the government negotiates with the union and how long have the teacher been teaching.

"It doesn't take a genius to figure out that teaching is more then getting students to write essays and read King Lear." You may want to read the post again. There only reference to King Lear is a bad experience many of us have gone through. You may have better experience on this. We are not getting what our tax dollars paid for.
